Is your modem is at risk?
Whether it’s cable or DSL modems, there are facts that show your modem can be compromised by a virus or a hacker, with the intent to steal your Internet connection.
Steps used to compromise Internet connections: They clone your MAC address. The MAC ID is located on the bottom of your cable or DSL modem that is provided to you when service is installed within your home or business. Their intent is to gain more internet speed. This allows them to file share with others without paying for faster service on their end. The time frame before your connection is compromised could be a day, week, or months. Then you notice your computer is running slower, is it a virus or is it your Internet connection?
The facts about compromised websites:
Comparing May 2007 to last month, the volume of threats facing Internet users increased 220%, researchers at a San Mateo, California-based managed web security company concluded. At the same time, the risk of exposure to exploits and compromised websites increased 407%, while backdoor and password-stealing malware shot up 855%.
During the past six months, a flood of attacks have compromised websites and loaded them with malicious scripts and iframes that infect visitor's computers with back-door-them backdoors and password stealers. While SQL injection attacks have been the most severe, other attacks have used stolen FTP credentials and cross-site scripting. Many of the attacks trace back to overseas hacking.
To quote a representative in web security, "It was a different world just a year ago, the advice has always been to avoid unknown and bad sites and to stick with known, trusted sites. In this current environment, the site that's likely to harm you is that known, legitimate site."
